O'Neil was a participant in O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges about her performance. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. Judges were amazed by her performance and recommended viewers to select those who sing well like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she was never in the third place ever again. Her performance on September 7 in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol straight away.
