O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family lived in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. She appeared in some commercials before moving from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. O'Grady began her career modeling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later a regular character in ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany.
